Just adding on to this thread with an quote from Lukes blog today.. Quote: The Canes are trying to add a forward, something that could happen in the next 48 hours. They're concerned about their NHL depth with Justin Williams out indefinitely and Matt Cullen's recovery from his concussion proceeding slowly. The price would probably be a draft pick or low-level prospect. The Canes are continuing to pursue a puck-moving defenseman as well, at a much higher price, but you can read all about that in the Tuesday newspaper. Ludicrous internet rumors aside, don't look for the Canes to start dumping players unless they're clearly out of contention at the deadline. *What I don't like about this is that obviously Cullen is having some real issues....

Concussions can be strange things. Sometimes they clear up rather quickly, sometimes they take a while. His just appears to be taking a lot longer than I first anticipated. :-\ As long as he becomes healthy enough to play before he has to RETIRE, I'll be happy.

MOVE OF THE DAY..... (at least we didn't give up anybody)... yet..
Quote: HURRICANES CLAIM SAMSONOV FROM CHICAGO Veteran winger to join Carolina tonight in Boston
RALEIGH, NC-Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager for the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has claimed right wing Sergei Samsonov on re-entry waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks. Samsonov is expected to join the Hurricanes in Boston for the team's game tonight against the Bruins (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network).
"Sergei brings NHL experience to add depth to our forwards," said Rutherford.
Samsonov, 29, earned four assists and six penalty minutes in 23 games with the Blackhawks this season before he was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League on Jan. 2 after clearing waivers. The Moscow, Russia, native was acquired by the Blackhawks on June 16, 2007 from Montreal in exchange for Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmelainen. Samsonov (5'8", 188 lbs.) has scored 178 goals and earned 244 assists (422 points) in 619 NHL regular-season games with Boston, Edmonton, Montreal and Chicago. The Bruins originally drafted Samsonov in the first round, eighth overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft with a pick acquired in the deal that brought defenseman Glen Wesley to the Hurricanes organization in 1994.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Hurricanes will be responsible for half of Samsonov's $3,525,000 salary for the remainder of this, the second season of a two-year deal he signed with Montreal in 2006.

Is he not the guy who played on Edmonton during the cup run??? (I am too lazy to look it up).
If it is he went to Montreal and had problems fitting in there and basically never did as well as the year he was with Edmonton.

Yes turn.. your absolutely right and I am QUITE impressed!!! I just looked it up and he was with the Oilers during the cup run and then went to Montreal..... Hmmmm... maybe a fresh start will help him get some of his old mojo back... he was also a first round draft choice in 1997 for the Bruins.

So he was on the Oilers when we beat them for the Cup? I hope he doesn't hold that against us... :-\

If I am not mistaken he was really good with them...he was a UFA and they couldn't resign him plus he wanted to move to the east. He just never fit in with Montreal and kinda bad-mouthed the team - he was a healthy scratch quite a bit after that. It was Montreal after all so we shouldn't hold that against him.

Tripp just asked him about game 7 Mel.. and he handled it very well.. not bashing either team.. just kept saying how happy he was to be here and be given this opportunity... May I say that I think it was absolutely awesome that Ronnie Francis met him at the airport and drove with him to the arena to welcome him to the Canes!!! OUR TEAM ROCKS!!!!

JR's mind is turning even more after the last loss.....
Quote: "I think what we have to really look at is the consistency of certain players," Rutherford said. "We have some good players that play really good at times and not so good at other times. For us to be successful, we can't have that. Maybe teams like Ottawa and Detroit can do it, but we can't.
"That's what we really have to look at now: Who really wants to be here. And everybody is not going to play their best every night, but we need it on a more consistent basis with real good work ethic."
With three days between games, the Hurricanes on Sunday sent flu-bug reinforcements Keith Aucoin, Tim Conboy and Brandon Nolan back to Albany (AHL) and activated Glen Wesley from injured reserve, where they had stashed the sick defenseman to open up a roster spot.
Wesley should be back for Tuesday's game at the Toronto Maple Leafs, as should Ray Whitney. More changes may be on the way as well.
"I believe we will turn this around," Rutherford said. "It may take a move or two to do it. ... We're at the point where I would be willing to make a move if it changes the makeup of our team."

AND.. Lukes blog update on what's going on : Quote: Adams traded to Chicago The Hurricanes traded Craig Adams to the Blackhawks for future considerations Thursday, a deal designed to send a message to the rest of the team as much as it was designed to change it.
Minus-8 with two goals and three assists through 40 games this season, Adams had been a core role player on the 2006 title team. But his penalty-killing had slipped and his departure signifies that no one is safe, even with a contract for next season.
In Chicago, Adams will be reunited with Kevyn Adams, albeit not right away. (Kevyn Adams is out indefinitely after tearing up a knee.)
While the deal was for unspecified future considerations, past considerations might be a better way to phrase it. The Hurricanes took Sergei Samsonov off Chicago's books by claiming him on re-entry waivers. Now the Hawks are doing the same for Carolina with Adams.
Adams' departure frees up a roster spot for the return of Matt Cullen, Scott Walker and possibly Bret Hedican tonight against the Senators.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited shake-up of the Canes is definitely under way over the past two weeks, and making its way up the ladder. It started with the backup goalie. Now, a fourth-line forward. Who's next?
