Hmmm.. maybe I wasn't so far off the mark in suggesting someone needs to look closer at the trainer/training going on.. here's a blurb from JR himself.
Quote: With enough seemingly capable players already waiting in the wings, Rutherford suggested that finding out why two of his players have already needed surgery to fix problems that arose in pre-camp workouts might be a bigger priority than making a trade.
”We’ve had a couple of years of really bad runs with injuries, but that doesn’t mean this has to continue,” he said. “I do think we have to take a closer look at how our players prepare themselves and how they train, because I’m not so sure that it’s just bad luck and maybe there has to be some adjustments as to how the players are prepared.”

Well, the Flyers basically told Simon Gagne that he had to be in better shape this year for Camp than last year. He admitted to going into camp last year with more weight than he usually carries. He said he went on a strict diet and started working out with someone Danny Briere told him about. I always thought these guys were in peak condition going into camp, but I guess with long layoff it's easy to slack off a bit. That 5k run probably didn't help. But in Brind'Amour's case, he is crazy when it comes to his workouts, so what happened there? Maybe surgery wasn't so successful after all.

I have no idea. I know Brindy and JWill had been working out together over the summer rehabing their knees... maybe they concentrated to hard on one area and neglected others and maybe it was just a freak accident. (Justins) As for Brindy's second surgery supposedly it was just to clean out some excess cartilage or something that they say is pretty common after the kind of major surgery he had.

JWill has always been pretty good about staying in shape on the whole. I'm inclined to believe it's a freak accident on the one hand, and I wonder about something else on the other.
I'll be the first to admit I'm just putting this out there, but is it possible that having to favor the left leg might cause overuse of the AT in the right leg? Because I know it works somewhat that way in horses, if they favor one leg over the other for a while, pretty soon the opposing leg has problems.

Good point Ellie... you have cleared one thing up for me though.. it WAS the other leg that this happened to and not the one he had surgery on last season? *snickers* at comparing JWill to a horse...

Yes, it was the right Achilles Tendon, versus the left ACL&MCL.
And you can't tell me he's not built like a racehorse. =D

I remember reading an article years ago and it said that sometimes the guys worked out too hard in the off season thinking they were staying in better shape and it caused more problems at the start of the season because they had used their muscles almost too much and in a different way. Apparently hockey work-outs on the ice use different muscle or use them in a different way that off-ice workouts.

From his hometown newspaper......poor Willie
Torn Achilles sidelines Williams Posted By JEFF GARD Updated 2 hours ago
Cobourg native Justin Williams was preparing for a big return to the Carolina Hurricanes lineup in the upcoming 2008-09 National Hockey League season, but instead suffered another major setback.
A torn right Achilles tendon that occurred during an off-ice training session on Wednesday is expected to sideline Williams for four to six months. The injury comes after the 26-year-old missed 43 games last season with a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) that occurred during a December 2007 game.
Craig Williams said his son is "absolutely depressed" about the latest injury.
"With the injury last year and now this injury, it's kind of hard on the mind," Mr. Williams said. "He's depressed as to (thinking) when he's going to play another hockey game."
Williams returned briefly from last season's injury on Apr. 1, only to leave with a torso injury after just 3:48 of playing time.
"You really feel for (Justin)," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford told the Cobourg Daily Star over the phone yesterday from his office in Raleigh, N. C. "He's a very good player -- an important player for us -- and a very good person. He wanted to come back and have a great year and now he won't be able to play the whole season."
Williams played all 82 games in both 2005-06 and 2006-07 and recorded back-to-back 30-goal seasons, 31 and 33 respectively, in those two campaigns. He also helped lead the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup championship in 2006.
His absence will be felt in the Hurricanes lineup. "(Justin) is a guy we project to be a 30-goal scorer,"
Rutherford said. "You really can't replace that." Williams, whose junior hockey career included brief stops with his hometown Cobourg Cougars Jr. A club as well as in Colborne Jr. C., was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday.
Justin's mother Denise left yesterday morning for North Carolina, Craig Williams said. She'll assist Justin with getting around, including to appointments, as well as his wife Kelly with son Jaxon, who was born in July.

Hey Girls, I spend the night working and missed all the JWill chit chat. That's so true Ellie about favoring the other leg. It's something I never would have thought of. Also, Turn's info was an eye opener. Poor Justin, , I can understand the depression. Everything just sucks!!! I wonder if Kelly likes her mother in law...lol...
