From the Mayo Clinic Site:

Injuries to your Achilles tendon — also called your heel cord — result from repeated stress on the tendon, which may be caused or aggravated by:

* Overuse
* Running on hills and hard surfaces
* Poor stretching habits
* Tight calf muscles
* Weak calf muscles
* Worn-out or ill-fitting shoes
* Flatfeet

Injuries to your Achilles tendon can often result from taking part in an activity involving stop-and-start footwork for which you're not conditioned or for which you haven't stretched properly. This might include playing tennis, racquetball or basketball for the first time after a long break.

Sometimes, though, injuries can occur from simply putting too much stress on your Achilles tendon in the course of a simple activity, such as gardening. Occasionally, even highly conditioned athletes may rupture an Achilles tendon.

As you age, the risk of Achilles tendon rupture may increase. If you don't exercise regularly, the Achilles tendon may weaken and become thin, making it more susceptible to injury.

And what it feels like:

First, there's a pop or a snap. Then an immediate sharp pain in the back of your ankle and lower leg that makes it impossible to walk properly. It almost feels like you've been kicked, or even shot.

Does NOT sound like fun at all.

Surgery. Surgery is a common treatment for a complete rupture of the Achilles tendon. The procedure generally involves making an incision in the back of your lower leg and stitching the torn tendon together. Depending on the condition of the torn tissue, the repair may be reinforced with other tendons.

Afterward, you'll need to spend about six to eight weeks with your leg in a walking boot, cast, brace or splint. To promote healing and to avoid stretching the surgical repair, your foot may initially be pointed slightly downward in the boot or brace, and then moved gradually to a neutral position.

Chad LaRose knew it was bad. Very bad.

The Hurricanes forward was working out Wednesday with teammate Justin Williams, getting in some off-ice exercises, when ...

"I was right next to him. He just stopped and there was a big pop," LaRose said today. "We all heard it — a big pop."

Just like that, Williams had torn his right Achilles tendon. After surgery, his recovery time is expected to be four to six months, leaving the Canes without one of their top wingers.

"It's tough. Justin's kind of irreplaceable," LaRose said. "You can't put anybody in his spot. It's tough for him and tough for us to swallow.

"It's tough but we've got a lot of guys here who can step up and contribute a little more."

Among the players general manager Jim Rutherford mentioned soon after Williams' injury were LaRose and Ryan Bayda. While the injury was devastating, Rutherford said, it would open up an opportunity for others.

Bayda, of course, didn't want it to come about this way. Not with Williams, who missed a chunk of last season with a serious knee injury, being sidelined again.

"It took months for him to get his knee back in shape," Bayda said. "To go down, just before the season, it stinks. But it's part of the game and something we'll have to deal with.

"We can't dwell on it. We've got enough guys here with enough experience to get us through this."

I know now he is hating being out for as long as he is - and so are we - but when his son grows up he will always have this time with him.

Course that is me being a sap.

I see your point Turn.. it's a lot more time than he would have normally had with Jaxon at this point.. doesn't make it any easier for me though... or all the other rabid fans that have waited since last December to see him back on the ice... Oh well.. nothing we can do but support our team anyway and hope for the best I guess...
