The Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings have scheduled a press conference for Monday morning, at which goaltender Dominik Hasek, one of the best in the history of the sport, will reportedly announce his retirement.
TSN of Canada reported Sunday night that Hasek, popularly known as "The Dominator", will retire at an 11:00 a.m. (et) press conference on Monday, officially ending his 15-season NHL career. The 43-year-old Czech Republic native spent four seasons in Detroit, where he led the Red Wings to a win in the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals, in the process becoming the first European starting goalie to win the title.
A six-time Vezina Trophy winner and two-time MVP, Hasek split time with Chris Osgood in net this season for Detroit, posting a 27-10-3 record, 2.14 goals against average and .902 save percentage in the process. Osgood took sole responsibility in net for the Red Wings early in the playoffs, and remained the starter as Detroit drove towards another championship.
Hasek retired once before, after winning the Cup in 2002. That only lasted one season, however, and he returned to Detroit for the 2003-04 season. After the 2004-05 lockout Hasek spent one season in Ottawa before returning to the Red Wings prior to the 2006-07 season, during which he led Detroit to the Western Conference finals.
"The Dominator" earned his nickname during his nine seasons in Buffalo, and also played for the Chicago Blackhawks. His career in Buffalo was marked by brilliance on the ice, but he was also known for a difficult personality that often drew the ire of Sabres management and fans.
The Sabres made one appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals with Hasek in net, the heartbreaking six-game loss to the Dallas Stars in 1999 that ended on a controversial overtime goal by Brett Hull that should have been waved off because Hull's foot was in the crease.
Hasek has 389 career wins, 223 losses, 82 ties and 13 overtime defeats with a 2.20 goals against average
