ALBANY, N.Y. - Ryan Potulny scored in the fifth overtime, ending the longest game in the 72-year history of the American Hockey League as the Philadelphia Phantoms beat the Albany River Rats 3-2 Thursday night.
The marathon game clocked in at 142 minutes, 58 seconds and eclipsed the previous record of 134 minutes, 56 seconds set in Game 2 of the 2003 Calder Cup final between the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Houston Aeros. Michael Ryder scored the winner as the Bulldogs escaped with a 2-1 win in a game where Hamilton netminder Ty Conklin and Houston goaltender Johan Holmqvist combined to make 162 saves.
Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead in the first-round Calder Cup series with the win.
Albany goaltender Michael Leighton made an incredible 98 saves in a losing effort. Leighton's performance, an unofficial record according to an AHL release, made Phantom goaltender Scott Munroe's exceptional 65-save effort look pedestrian in comparison.
Jared Ross scored twice in regulation for Philadelphia, including the game-tying goal at 15:13 of the third period.
Kiel McLeod scored both Albany goals.
