RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed its 2007 first-round draft pick, forward Brandon Sutter, to a three-year contract. Beginning with the 2008-09 season, the contract will pay Sutter $787,500 per season at the NHL level or $65,000 per season at the minor-league level. Sutter receives a $262,500 signing bonus as a part of the contract and will report today to Carolina’s top minor-league affiliate, the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League.
“We’re excited about signing Brandon,” said Rutherford. “We look forward to his continued development, and watching him work his way toward playing with the Hurricanes.”
Sutter, 19, completed his third full season with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League on March 15, finishing his final junior hockey season with team-highs in goals (26) and points (49). Sutter (6’3”, 170 lbs.) joined the Rebels at the end of the 2004-05 season, and scored 68 goals and earned 86 assists (154 points) in 205 career regular-season WHL games.
Sutter represented Canada at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation’s World Junior Championships in the Czech Republic in December and January, earning one assist and a plus-1 plus/minus rating in Canada’s seven-game march to the goal medal. Born in Huntington, NY, but raised in Red Deer, Alb., Sutter is the son of former NHL player, and current New Jersey Devils head coach, Brent Sutter, and is the ninth member of his family drafted into the NHL.
