First Ladd awards presented

Two local youth received the biggest hockey opportunities of their lives to date on Tuesday as recipients of the first Andrew Ladd Awards.
The prize: free summer fitness training.
A joint initiative by Ladd, a Maple Ridge resident who recently completed his second season with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, and FitLife Sports Performance’s Adam Francilla, the award was designed to give back to young hockey players between the atom and midget levels who have demonstrated talent and dedication for the game and have proven themselves to be leaders.
Two awards were given out – one for the atom/peewee level and one for bantam/midget.
The first two award winners are Daniel McRobert, playing at the peewee level, and Reese Rivard, a bantam.
The creation of the award was Francilla’s idea.
“Last summer ... I wanted to do something to give back to the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association,” he said.
Many of the organization’s athletes have trained at his facility, including Ladd, who still trains at the Maple Ridge gym during the off-season.
The award “would allow a couple of athletes there to do our elite summer training camp for free.”
For the bantam/midget level, that means not having to pay the $2,500 it costs for the intense program, and $800 to $1,000 for the atom/peewee level.
It’s “something they might not be able to do on their own,” Francilla said.
He ran his idea past Ladd.
“He said, ‘absolutely.’”
For the awards, rep coaches nominate one player from their team – there are about 11 rep teams in the RMMHA – who demonstrates potential, passion, a positive influence on and off the ice, and takes charge of their own development. Nominations came in a couple of months ago, complete with letters highlighting each youth from the coaches.
“When I whittled it down to the last few candidates, I called [Andrew] in Carolina and we corporately picked the winners,” he said.
Both boys received certificates as keepsakes, and Ladd himself presented them on Tuesday.
Ladd and Francilla are covering the costs themselves.
“It could make one of these kids’ hockey careers,” Francilla said.
The camps take place July 3 to Aug. 24.
