I found my video of Nathan Paetsch (he's our seventh defensemen) from the morning skate on Dec. 28th (I believe that was the day of the Canes game...) and after practice, Paetsch was doing some conditioning work with a parachute. I had heard about the parachute, but I had never seen it in action until that day, and I must say, it was awesome....and incredibly adorable. haha By the time I got my camera out he was finishing, but you can still see him skating with it, and the best part is when Jim Corsi picks it up with it still attached to him, i just thought it was so funny...haha. video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2134236642156837738&hl=en

It's to make him skate faster...well, the parachute makes him work harder, and in turn he will eventually be faster, I mean. I remember reading something in the paper about it...at the beginning of the season, before Tallinder was hurt the first time, James Patrick did a lot of extra work with him to keep him conditioned since he wasn't playing in the games yet, and they mentioned that parachute thing. Then at that practice, after all the other players left, I look over, and Patrick has his arms around Paetsch's waist, and I'm like, "WOAH...what's going on over there..." hahaha Then I realized that he was strapping the parachute to him. LOL I felt kinda bad that they made him do it in front of all those people, haha, because that was during winter break and there were tons and tons of people there.

The parachute gives you resistance to pull against, helping to build muscle. We have the same idea in soccer, although I've never used it. Basically, the muscle you build up with it will make you faster without it.

It's for the drag effect. Same principle as using those stretch bands to pull against with your legs and arms. The faster you skate with a 'chute, the more air it scoops, acting literally as an airbrake. To make up for the added resistance, the skater has to put more force into skating, adding speed. It's a great work-out,and is not stressful to the joints.

Soooo....yesterday morning at practice, Max Afinogenov and Daniel Paille, who are both out with hand injuries, were skating with PARACHUTES! It was amazing, especially seeing Max with it because he's so fast, I took a video of it, I'll post it when I finally get around to uploading it. haha
